St. Joseph's Hospital hosts a Learning Lab for experts in health care and patient safety. Participants share ideas about hospital design for patient safety with hospital management and staff. A set of Facility Design Principles is established to guide the development of the new St. Joseph's Hospital.
Gresham, Smith and Partners of Nashville, Tennessee is selected as architect and the construction firm of CG Schmidt, Inc. of Milwaukee as general contractor for the new hospital project.

Building site at Highway 45 and Pleasant Valley Road is selected.
Architects meet with physicians, management, and Learning Lab attendees to brainstorm ideas around safe design and department adjacencies within the new hospital.
August 2002
SynergyHealth announces plans to build an eight-bedroom hospice for the terminally ill on the new hospital site. This residential facility, The Kathy Hospice, is the first of its kind in Washington County.
An election is held to determine which employees will be part of the Facility Design Advisory Council.
Hospital design surveys are distributed to patients and their families to identify patient opinions on hospital design.
September 2002
St. Joseph's Hospital completes the purchase of approximately 143 acres of land located at the northwest corner of Highway 45 and County Highway PV in the Town of Polk.
October 2002
The new hospital site is dedicated in a ceremony attended by more than 100 people.
November 2002
Mock-up rooms are completed in Med/Surg, New Life Center, and ICU of existing St. Joseph's Hospital. Staff is encouraged to give suggestions and feedback.
January 2003
Department design teams finish their proposals and submit checklists demonstrating compliance with Facility Design Principles.
A retreat is held for members of the Facility Design Advisory Council, the executive team, the architects, and the construction team to review the schematics and assure that all design principles and precarious events have been addressed.
March 2003
Department adjacencies confirmed and schematics near completion. Standardized room layout confirmed. Updates to Med/Surg mock-up room begin. The room will be used for simulation training and to experiment with different design options for lighting, paint, etc.
July 2003
Architectural design of the new St. Joseph's Hospital is unveiled.
August 2003
Official groundbreaking; site preparation begins.
September 2003
First concrete poured.
November 2003
Transition team established; Creative Healthcare USA provides training in Six Sigma quality methods.
December 2003
First steel goes in at new hospital site.
March 2004
Steel framework completed.
April 2004
Masonry work begins.
Summer 2004
Patient Transfer Planning Team formed.
November 2004
Substantial completion of building enclosure.
December 2004
Sewer and water services available to the new building.
Initial start up of building boilers/HVAC system.

Curbing, sidewalks, and pavement poured. Landscaping begins with completion projected in early spring.

Completion of new hospital, including interior construction and finishes which were phased and sequenced by floor: 2, 3, 1, Garden Level (GL).
